Directors Viewfinder Thing

What is the correct name for the viewfinder-sype thing a director or cinematographer uses to find their shots?

I heard it called a directors scope or directors viewer.

Super-8 cameras make pretty good low cost scopes. And if you bring a cartridge of film with you, you can actually sneak some film into your production, (assuming it adds prod value rather than confuse).

i wonder if this could be used to record standard DV ? but with better lenses?
